Arts, Media, Culture

Arts, Media, Culture Thematic Area

Bringing together the arts we have been able to reach a deeper understanding of the human condition. With the main purpose of changing attitudes and prejudices we engage audiences and challenge their stereotypes. We have assembled an international collection from artists, musicians and filmmakers with or without disabilities. Through art, music and filmmaking this program shares a global perspective of what inclusion, participation and disability really means.

A Word Enabled Initiative is a vibrant network of people committed to implementing the UN Convention on The Rights of People with Disability through media.

We do this by BRINGING TOGETHER creators, distributors, viewers, and advocates of meaningful media;

EMPOWERING members with tools and resources to succeed;

RESHAPING the media landscape through research, education, and dialogue on Disability.

Disability Media Initiative

2009 Tour Dates

The "It's Our Story" Flag is a conceptual art presentation of how disability has touched our lives over the past 50 years. It represents a work in progress. "And what's the work? The work is to ease the pain of living, everything else, drunken-dumb show." Thank you Allen Ginsberg who first articulated his vision of the "work" for him.

The Disability Media Initiative is about crafting the digital tools to tell a story made by the people, for the people, and of the people. Its Our Story is the future under development created from our past. The DMI archives represent the history of living with, for, or around a disability these past fifty years in America. Our first objective is to free our voice to the online world. Since July 2005, 548 people from 61 cities and counting have contributed their insights, experiences, and lessons to make this achievable.  Read More.
